System hangs when playing audio CD on NEC Intersect drive due to wrong mode.
Cause:
Windows 95 does not support protected-mode audio play for all CD-ROM drives.
Solution:
Open both the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files in Notepad and remove the 'rem - By Windows Setup' phrase. Save the files. This will force Windows 95 to use real-mode drivers.
NOTE: The following task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
1) Edit Autoexec.bat using 'Notepad':
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'. (A submenu appears.)
c) Select 'Notepad'. (The 'Untitled - Notepad' window appears.)
d) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
e) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
f) Click 'Open'. (The 'Autoexec.bat - Notepad' window appears.)
g) Create a backup copy of Autoexec.bat:
1] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
2] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive:\ AUTOEXEC.BAK
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
3] Click 'Save'. (The 'Autoexec.bak - Notepad' window appears.)
h) Locate the line with the filename Mscdex.exe.
i) If the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -' precedes the contents of the line:
1] Select the phrase ' rem - By Windows Setup -'. (The phrase is highlighted.)
NOTE: Windows 95 ignores any step that begins with 'rem' or ';'.
2] Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Delete'.
j) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
k) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\ AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).

c) Click 'Open'. (The 'Config.dos - Notepad' window appears.)
NOTE: If your computer does not have the file Config.dos, contact a qualified computer technician or next-level support.
d) Locate the line(s) with the reference /<drive>:MSCD000
(where <drive> is the CD-ROM drive letter).
e) Write down the contents of that line for reference.

a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)

f) If the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -' precedes the contents of the line:
1] Select the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -'. (The phrase is highlighted.)
2] Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Delete'.
NOTE: If there are two lines containing /<drive>:MSCD000 (where <drive> is the CD-ROM drive letter), make sure the line that matches the one found in Config.dos is NOT remarked out and the other line IS remarked out.
